Abhorrent and Angry
These paintings re-imagine Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein” through the transformative lens of menopause, delving into themes of creation, destruction, and identity. Reflecting my encounters with the culture of silence and sexism surrounding menopause, I mix domestic craft techniques and accessible water-based media to create paintings that evoke a sense of disorientation and loss. Bindings, braids, and netting are new recurring figures within these compositions, and are paired with fabric sculptures that allude to my own aging body. This work exposes a substantial gap in understanding this life stage and serves as an opportunity for necessary conversation about ageism, sexism, and representation. The artwork incorporates text from the novel, paintings, and sculptural pieces crafted from disparate materials like paper and fabric, bound with knots, and netting.
